What Is GAP Insurance?
If your car is totaled or stolen, standard comprehensive/collision insurance only pays out its current market value — not what you still owe on the loan. GAP (Guaranteed Asset Protection) insurance covers that difference, so you're not left paying off a loan for a car you no longer have.
When GAP Coverage Is Most Valuable
- You made a small or no down payment
- You have a long loan term (72–84 months)
- You rolled negative equity from a trade-in into this loan
- Your vehicle depreciates quickly relative to your remaining balance
Check your projected value over time with the car depreciation calculator, or your current trade-in value with the trade-in value calculator.
Disclaimer: This tool estimates your equity position only. Whether GAP coverage
is worthwhile depends on your specific loan, insurance policy, and state regulations.
